HELLO BEAUTIES. It’s May, the temps are swinging radically between 50 and 80 degrees, and we are due for a CLOSET SWAP!
CLOSET SWAP, a series where I ask stylish friends of mine a bunch of nosy questions about their personal style, is by far one of my favorite parts of writing Costume Change. And for this month’s version, I decided to mix it up/get a little fun/get a little greedy. This edition of CLOSET SWAP is a group number. You heard me! I gave a group of friends a fashion prompt, and then picked a meet-up spot where they could show up dressed in response to that prompt. So, instead of digging in one person’s closet, this week feels like digging in a LOT of people’s closets. FUN.
We met at Bia in South Williamsburg (much vibes, much yum), where the wonderful Natalie Powers was ready and waiting to shoot everyone’s fierce looks. It was both a style-fest and an excuse to hang with some of my people, and now I am here to SHARE THOSE GOODS. Get ready chickens, a lot of eye candy is coming your way. This month’s CLOSET SWAP is giving photo journal, and it may also be giving “too big for inbox”—so here’s your warning to click “view in browser” now.
The Prompt(s)
First things first! The prompt! The buddies could choose either of the following two fashion prompts:
1.) SHOULDERS. Shoulder pads, shoulders out, shoulder season.
or
2.) CELEBRITIES. Cast yourself in a fake NYC sitcom/drama/dramedy, and come dressed as your "character."
And to be honest, most people were kind of doing both.
Fashion feast below!
My take:

For me, dressing for shoulder season is essentially just dressing like you live in Northern California, where it is shoulder season all year long. A little bit of glorious sun during the day, but cold in the shade/at night. Enter this vintage jacket! I like a little oversized moment if I am showing some skin—it makes a sassy little midriff feel more nonchalant. [And for me, dressing like the star of my own drama series is sort of daily goal. #leoseasonallyearlong]
Nina

Nina Yancy everybody! Giving us feathers and kicks! Also, if you don’t know about the Mary-Kate & Ashley effect…
Now you know. (It’s okay if you didn’t know before, I made it up.) Essentially, the MK&A effect is when parents dress their children in the same outfits so much as toddlers that they grow up and dress alike on accident. I’m no psychologist, but this is real, people!
Moving on.
Jacob

Meet my brother-in-law, holding it down for the straights and the Hoochie Daddies. [Here’s maybe the father of all Hoochie Daddies, and you’re welcome for that.] Peep those cuties on the bottom right! <3!
Emily

Emily Palmquist is one fierce bit$h and that’s all there is to say on that. Talk about understanding the assignment! ALSO, Emily is showing/selling work this weekend at The Other Art Fair BK! Go find booth #107, and buy some art!
Clinton

Gimme those boots. There are babes over here in Brooklyn, okay?! And, I know this a fashion newsletter, but can we take a moment for these CURLS? (HOT TIP if you’re a dancer girlie—Clint teaches at Steps on Fridays and Sundays, if you want to see those curls in action.)
Claire

Meet my cousin-sister and mini-me, who always, always looks great. Case in point: this woman had just gotten off a flight from London, and she looks THIS GOOD. I am weak in the face of jet lag and thus in awe.
Victoria

We’re ending STRONG, okay?! V had so many great shots I literally didn’t know how to choose. AND SHE JUST DROPPED A FIERCE SINGLE—go listen to it here.
A BONUS/Phone a Friend!
My friends Lee and Ricky couldn’t make it out in time for the profesh pics, but they did get *dressed*, and so we must shout out:
Lee
Ricky
They so cute!
And thats it! EYE CANDY FOR DAYS. There’s your sugar intake for the week. Really, really fun—so much so that I might have to do it…again? I’d love to highlight even more fierce personal style, and meet more of this CC community! SO. Keep your eyes peeled for a summer Costume Change event, and a chance to get your own ca-ute street style pics in the next couple of months. In the meantime, steal this prompt for your week? (Tag me so I can seeeeee!) Go out there and give shoulder my babes.
See you next week xx.
