I clocked the shirt right away. Julia is very petite, but not at all fragile. More edgy. A touch of punk princess. And she was wearing an amazing, oversized, brown menswear short-sleeved button-up. I was working through a rut in my own personal rehearsal looks, and my coworker’s shirt, causally thrown over capped black leggings and a white tank, looked very hip and easy and “oh this?” By the end of the day, I knew I was going to steal the look.
The great thing about fashion—and all creative outlets—is that the occasional theft (*reinterpreted through the lens of the thief!) can be the best way to develop personal taste. Great artists steal! And, as I informed Julia during our rehearsal process, I would be hitting a Thrift Store Near Me with the express purpose of stealing her COOL VIBES, and/or finding my own version of her oversized shirt.
Surprise, I found it! This story has no stakes, lol. But for $30 at 10 Ft. Single by Stella Dallas in Williamsburg, I found love via a navy blue silk men’s short-sleeved button-up, very thin, size L. And we are happy in our wedded bliss! Very much in the spirit of the first ever Costume Change newsletter, this silk button-up is so very versatile. The perfect layer for transitional seasons! A great visual-texture add!
Here are some photos of us on our honeymoon, exclusively taken in the elevator of my new apartment building:
Are you jealous of our love? Well don’t be, because you can get your cute little butt to the thrift store and be a thief, just like me! If you do decide to do a little shopping, the keys to this castle are:
1.) go oversized
2.) look for good quality, thin material, and—
3.) pick a color you love.
Try your short-sleeved cutie with jeans, over dresses, and under jackets. Try it especially over active or super-casual wear, for a little nonchalant oomph. Or try it some other magical way I haven’t thought of yet, and let your girl know.
Ta for now!
Costume Change is first and foremost a styling newsletter (vs. a shopping newsletter). As always, I hope that CC provides you with inspiration to re-style inside of your own closet. There’s no spon-con above—any references to clothing/shoes/shops, etc. are purely honest-to-goodness recommendations. If you liked this post, you can let me know by clicking that cute lil’ heart!
